What Is the Spinal Flow Technique?
The Spinal Flow Technique is a gentle, hands-on therapy that supports the body’s natural ability to heal by focusing on spinal and nervous system health. Created by chiropractor and holistic practitioner Dr. Carli Axford, this approach helps people reconnect with their body’s innate ability to restore health and improve overall well-being.
Core Principles of Spinal Flow Technique
1. Nervous System and Spinal Health
At the heart of Spinal Flow is the belief that the spine and nervous system are integral to our health. The nervous system governs every process in the body, and when the spine is under stress, whether from physical strain, emotional trauma, or chemical exposure, it can interfere with the body’s natural function. These disturbances, known in Spinal Flow as “blockages,” can trap the body in a state of stress response (fight, flight, or freeze).
Ideally, after a perceived threat passes, the body should return to a state of rest and repair. But in today’s fast-paced world, chronic stress often prevents this. Emotional experiences, especially unresolved trauma, can stay locked in the spine and nervous system. This ongoing stress activation can contribute to both physical symptoms and emotional overwhelm.
2. Restoring Natural Energy Flow
Spinal Flow works on the understanding that our bodies are designed to have a free flow of energy, or what’s sometimes called “innate intelligence.” This energy, carried by cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), is like fuel for the nervous system. If there’s a kink in the system, often from stress or trauma, the flow becomes disrupted. The technique aims to clear these blockages and restore movement of CSF through the spine, supporting better function and helping the body return to a state of ease.
3. Gentle, Specific Contact
Rather than using forceful adjustments, Spinal Flow relies on subtle, precise contact using just one finger on specific access points, primarily on the sacrum and at the base of the skull (cranium). These areas provide gateways to the nervous system, helping to activate the body’s natural healing capacity.
4. Mind-Body Awareness
Spinal Flow encourages people to tune into their internal world. By increasing awareness of physical sensations and areas of stored tension, clients often experience deeper connection between mind and body. Many report feelings of calm, emotional release, and a new sense of clarity following sessions.
5. A Whole-Person Approach
This technique looks beyond symptoms to understand the deeper causes of imbalance, be they physical, emotional, or energetic. It recognises how long-term stress can impact our health and helps support a return to alignment, vitality, and peace.
